It's ironic that Qwest, a company known for horrible customer service and atrocious anti-competitive practices, would be the one taking a stand. Do I cheer them on or continue to boo at them from the sidelines?

If nothing else, this exposes the danger of large telco conglomerates. Instead of negotiating with dozens of regional competitors, they can just make a one-stop shop to three companies to get wiretaps going. Scary.

Great link. Glenn Greenwald has been tireless in his work covering the issue of domestic spying.

Ditto to what Mark N. said. I continue to be amazed that George Bush and the Republican Party enjoy support among LDS folk. Besides lying to get us into a war, the Bush Administration has expanded the powers of the executive far beyond what any Democratic president had, and far beyond what the founders certainly envisioned.

"We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion."

This (especially) includes our government.

When the founding fathers set up our system of government, there was a built-in mindset that the government is not to be trusted. It has to be watched all the time. It it to be expected that it will attempt to relieve us of our rights whenever, and however, it can.

Why are most of us so unwilling to believe this?
