War Without End – The Neo-Conservative Vision of the World

July 20, 2006 at 10:16 am | Posted in Uncategorized | 2 Comments

A great article from the Cato Institute on the vision that neo-conservatives have of the world. Just today, two op-eds in the LA Times talked about letting Israel do its thing, and about possibly striking Syria and Iran. Just a few days ago, Kristol was talking about striking Iran. In the Weekly Standard, Kristol says, this is our war too. War War War!

Who talks of peace these days?

  1. You’re talking about peace, and I am. That makes two of us.

In all seriousness, and I’m not justifying the poor state of peace efforts, it’s hard to talk about peace when those who support war have been the ones who have been able to frame the debate. President Bush has made clear that those who differ with him don’t merely differ with him, they are allied with the enemy.

So come out in favor of steps that favor peace, and you’re labeled a terrorist, a nonpatriot or worse.

So maybe what we need to do is reframe the debate. And that doesn’t mean calling anyone who disagrees with us warmongers, as some on the left have done. It means, at the least, offering workable alternatives to present policies (which is difficult, becausse we’re starting out in a failed position).

Keep up the good work, RHMD.

  2. anonymous,

thank you for the compliment. After witnessing the events of the past several years, I’ve come to the conclusion that only two workable options are available to nations:

    1. Total and complete war.

    2. Total and complete peace.

Modern warfare attempts to play it safe, but this only further angers the victims, turning them into enemies. I’m afraid it doesn’t work.

I vie for peace and can only hope others listen.
