Note the timing of the following two news tidbits, (one following the other, purposefully, on CNN.com)

Bush: Bin Laden Wanted Iraq As New Base

Justice Aide Who Took Fifth to Testify in Attorney Firings

Note that the intelligence Bush offers about Bin Laden comes from 2005.

President Bush on Tuesday declassified intelligence showing in 2005 Osama bin Laden planned to use Iraq as a base from which to launch attacks in the United States, according to White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe.

Johndroe said the intelligence was declassified so the president could discuss the previously secret material on Wednesday during a commencement address at the Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut.

Here is what is happening today:

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ former White House liaison is scheduled to testify on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, speaking out for the first time on her role in the controversial U.S. attorney firings.

Monica Goodling, who served as Gonzales’ senior counsel, is the only key official who has not yet testified about the firings of eight U.S. attorneys.

Her lawyers initially kept her from testifying, saying she would cite her Fifth Amendment right to protection from self-incrimination, but she will now be granted immunity.

Unfortunately, which one will garner more evening news across the nation? Why our bogeyman, of course, Bush…er…Bin Laden. Sorry, a little slip up. I mean it is Bush who keeps trying to scare us into following his way. That’s what a bogeyman does, scare people.

Seriously, if this information came out in 2005, why did Bush feel like needing to hold on to this until now? Why not release it in 2005 to prove that his war in Iraq was a just cause? And why to the Coast Guard Academy of Connecticut? Why not to the whole nation? Why hold on to it, unless you are holding on to them to use them at politically sensitive times, like say, today, when one of your former goons testifies with immunity from prosecution?

  2. To spare ordinary folks the bother of having to ask:

    Who is Monica Goodling ?

    What is “caging” ?

Why does her opening mention of it lead me to suspect some level of “caging”-related anxiety on her part ?

Is Wikipedia correct in describing “caging” as a term applied to a technique of voter suppression ?

If there’s nothing to see here, why the requests for immunity and the admissions of guilt ?

Where are the folks who actually know the reasons for the replacements that were made ?

How to avoid the sad conclusion that Justice was being run like an extension of the White House Political Office, with US Attorneys designated as troops in the continuation of electoral victory by other means ?

When did electoral victory become so important that otherwise bright kids would risk so much to guarantee it?

The BBC reports that it has obtained a document from George W. Bush’s Florida campaign headquarters, inadvertently e-mailed to the parody website GeorgeWBush.org, containing a list of 1,886 names and addresses of voters in largely African-American and Democratic areas of Jacksonville.

Democratic Party officials allege that the document is a “caging list” that the Bush campaign intends to use to issue mass challenges to African-American voters, in violation of federal law.

While Florida statutory law allows the parties to challenge voters at the polls, this practice is not allowed if the challenges appear to be race-based.

The list appears to have come to light because of what appear to be e-mails accidentally addressed by Republican campaigners to the georgewbush.org anti-Bush site instead of the georgewbush.com Bush campaign site.

The e-mails had the subject line “Re: Caging” and contained Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file attachments called “Caging.xls” and “Caging-1.xls”

2002 N.H. Scandal Shadows GOP Anew

A three-year-old political scandal in New Hampshire — where Republican operatives conspired to jam Democratic get-out-the-vote phone lines on Election Day 2002 — [became] a national headache for GOP leaders, who [were] pressed to explain why one author of the scheme was repeatedly calling the White House.

Ken Mehlman, former director of the White House political office and [former] chairman of the Republican National Committee [fought] Democratic efforts to force him to testify under oath in a civil suit about the New Hampshire scandal.

“You have somebody who’s committing a felony, and he’s calling [the White House] during the planning, the execution and when it’s falling apart,” [Dem attorney Paul] Twomey said, adding that he will request records listing what outgoing calls were made from the White House during the same time. Twomey told New Hampshire reporters that the RNC’s coverage of the legal fees “raises questions of who they were protecting, how high does this go and who was in on this.”

Old questions, new Congress, any chance we’ll get more answers this time around?

  5. Chino,

Thanks for sharing those. We’re barely uncovering the corruption of this administration, and when all is come out, we really will be embarrassed with this period in our history, as a nation.
