Conservative FoxNews Loves Communist China

It seems Rupert Murdoch, the conservative CEO of NewsCorp, owner of such “capitalist” stalwarts as FoxNews and New York Post loves dealing with the Communist leadership of China.

Mr. Murdoch has flattered Communist Party leaders and done business with their children. His Fox News network helped China’s leading state broadcaster develop a news Web site. He joined hands with the Communist Youth League, a power base in the ruling party, in a risky television venture, his China managers and advisers say.

Now, this is the part that I just don’t get, based on how conservatives like to portray themselves, as fighters against evil Communism:

Mr. Murdoch cooperates closely with China’s censors and state broadcasters, several people who worked for him in China say. He cultivates political ties that he hopes will insulate his business ventures from regulatory interference, these people say.

In speeches and interviews, Mr. Murdoch often supports the policies of Chinese leaders and attacks their critics. A group of China-based reporters for The Journal accused him in a letter to Dow Jones shareholders of “sacrificing journalistic integrity to satisfy personal and political aims,” a charge the News Corporation denies.

I guess making good money is a higher priority than freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom to own guns, etc.

Oh and by the way, FoxNews is NOT banned in China. My blog is. Try it out, and see if your blog is banned.

  1. So where’s the criticism for Google and Yahoo? They’re significantly more complicit in the censorship game than Murdoch will ever be.

  2. Jesse,

Because Google and Yahoo do not pretend that they are fighting Communism like Rupert’s media empire pretends to.

  3. I guess making good money is a higher priority than freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom to own guns, etc.

Well, duh! Everybody (in red-state-land) knows that the most important freedom of all is the freedom to sell stuff at the highest possible price while paying your workers the lowest possible wage, especially if it involves outsourcing the labor to countries where they don’t have to pay the workers more than 10 or 15 cents per hour.

    Get with the program!

  4. So, would my blogs be banned or is it because wordpress or Blogger are banned?

  9. What to make of this recent comment at Times & Seasons:

#63: This is my first comment from my new home here in Saudi Arabia. How timely a post for me.

Also, it’s interesting to note that just about every other site in the Bloggernacle, including the archipeligo and LDSelect is BLOCKED. Times and Seasons is the only one I can access. What does it all mean?

I understand the various anomalies that might allow Times & Seasons to get past the Great Firewall of China, but how is it that T&S somehow manages to get the same pass from both the Chinese AND the Saudi Arabian censors?

I mean, like the saying goes, “fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.” Or something like that.

Anyway, how to account for this phenomenon being repeated in both China AND Saudi Arabia? I’m gonna be keepin’ my tinfoil hat screwed on tight until somebody comes up with a rational explanation for what looks to be more like a trend than easily dismissed coincidence …
