The US Military Still Does Not Understand

You simply do not do something like this. Not if you want to win the hearts of these very people. Because that’s where the real battle is. No matter how many Taliban fighters you kill, if you do not win the hearts of the civilians in Afghanistan, you will lose and the Taliban will win. It is painful that this needs to be repeated over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

I think in the future I will simply be against ANY US intervention anywhere in the world on the basis that the US military is simply incapable of doing the job right.

  1. Luckily for you buddy, you don’t have to… Since were not leaving Afghanistan any time soon I think it would be great if this administration brought back the Draft… Then maybe you could go?

  2. as long as you are there next to me. 🙂

  3. Hey this got me thinking, you know… you seem to have all these ideas about how to win wars and stuff maybe you really should join the military Daniel. Aren’t your numerous war winning strategies and vast knowledge of military operations especially counter-insurgencies going to waste here on the homefront? If only you didn’t have to have experience to be a General i’m sure someone would have made you one a long time ago!

  4. It’s not a bad idea, but alas, I’m more interested in the larger political picture, and not the micro-military tactics stuff. From a political viewpoint, the killing of civilians in a counter-insurgency is about the worst thing you could do if you want to win.

  5. so is not having enough troops, which is why America needs you to step up to the plate… Maybe you can be the guy who gets shot when the combatant status of a person in “civilian” clothes is in question? Maybe you can be the guy to “sacrifice” himself to appease bloggers back in the states like yourself?

  6. nah, I’d rather send over you. 🙂

  7. of course you would and you’d be more than happy to critique every little tactical (every once in a while strategic but mostly tactical) move the U.S. military made from the comfort of your computer desk.

  8. yep, you got me down pat.

  9. “comments from the peanut gallery” most people ignore em I’m just bored.

  10. so why bother?

  11. lowbrow entertainment… so, seen any good movies lately?

  12. heh, don’t need to see good movies lately, or haven’t you seen the latest entertainment?

  13. hmmm… I don’t really see anything wrong with that situation.

  14. what, you mean a Congressman disrespecting the president of the United States whilst speaking to Congress? You do realize it is actually written in the House rules of decorum that you cannot call the president a liar when he is speaking in Congress. That rule was set up by the Founding Fathers, way back then. You don’t think there is anything wrong with a situation where you have the first ever such incident occurring? Do you realize the ammo Mr. Wilson just gave his opponents? A white southerner telling a black president he is a liar?

  15. I’m pretty sure it’s not the first time… If you’ve got a link to that rule I wouldn’t mind checking it out… As for your emphasis on race, I hope you’ve agreed with Justice Clarence Thomas of the Supreme Court all of the time… :.)

    read it and weep.

as for racism, don’t conflate the issue. It’s about how you treat someone. I disagree with Justice Thomas, but I am not going to disrespect him.

  17. I’m sure plenty of congress-people have violated that but with the cards stacked the way they are yeah it’s probably not a good idea for Wilson to talk that way. As for the whole race thing if I understand you correctly you can only call someone a liar if they have the same skin color as you?

  18. no no sturgeon, call someone a liar when your evidence is clear, and can be backed up. Mr. Wilson’s tirade is based on lies. If Justice Thomas clearly lies (which he hasn’t, he’s a fairly honorable guy), then I’ll say that he is lying.

  19. is your evidence clear? I haven’t seen a copy of any of the proposed health care reform legislation… but i’m interested…

  20. my evidence for what?

  21. that proposed health care legislation isn’t going to give free health care for illegal immigrants.

  22. Where is your evidence that it WILL?

  23. maybe Joe Wilson knows something you and I don’t… When it comes to race though it

  24. seems you jump to a lot of conclusions without evidence.
