The Roman Catholic Church covered up decades of sexual abuse by their priests

An expert commission says the Roman Catholic Church in Dublin covered up decades of priests’ sexual abuse of children because its bishops were determined to protect the church’s reputation at the expense of victims.

Maybe the Catholic Church doesn’t realize this, but this destroys the whole nature of the Catholic Church. Instead of protecting the innocent against the sins of evil men, the Catholic Church protected itself and its reputation (whatever that means, whatever is left of it). Don’t go to the Catholic Church to see men of God. They are not there. That’s what the Catholic Church has essentially said with this action. You will see men who find any way possible to hide their own sins and crimes. Just imagine this. A priest is supposed to represent Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, and he not only sexually abuses children (!) but then gets his boss, the bishop to cover his pedophile ass. No wonder atheism is on the rise. If this is what Jesus Christ is all about, it is no wonder many people want none of Him.

UPDATE: The piece has been updated with more information from the report. This paragraph is damning:

The report said all four archbishops sought ”the maintenance of secrecy, the avoidance of scandal, the protection of the reputation of the church, and the preservation of its assets. All other considerations, including the welfare of children and justice for victims, were subordinated to these priorities.”

  1. I love how you say “F-you” to just about everyone. You so effectively channel your hate for others in your blog posts.

I wish you well in your quest to tear down and destroy the Catholic church. If any religion deserves it, it is the Catholic church. They even withhold communion to Democrat legislators who support abortion. It is a woman’s right to choose, not theirs!!!!! Who the “F” do they think they are? They are NOT God’s church and they have no right to deny anyone communion, marriage, or anything else in their godless church. All of their money came from war profiteering when they collected treasure and art from Nazis and Jews. Obama should seize their assets in the US and pay reparations to anyone who has been hurt by the Catholic church.

  2. Not just about everyone. Just those who deserve it. 🙂

  3. “Don’t go to the Catholic Church to see men of God. They are not there.”

That’s a very broad brush you’re painting with.

The wise theologian, Krister Stendahl, suggested three rules to follow when speaking of another religion (rules he stated while defending the construction of an LDS temple in Sweden):

    (1) When you are trying to understand another religion, you should ask the adherents of that religion and not its enemies.

    (2) Don’t compare your best to their worst.

    (3) Leave room for “holy envy.” (By this Stendahl meant that you should be willing to recognize elements in the other religious tradition or faith that you admire and wish could, in some way, be reflected in your own religious tradition or faith.)

While your comment was not a comparison, I think it violated the spirit of rule #2, as though the Catholic church thinks child abuse is just fine; it’s a big organization with both righteous and wicked adherents––like every organization. For my part, the most holy and thoroughly Christian individual I know (personally) is a Catholic priest.

  4. Latter Day Guy,

You are right. Those two sentences are not accurate. They were written in anger.

  5. Dan,

I wouldn’t be so harsh, since the apple doesn’t fall so far from the tree in Mormondom. I personally know several of the so-called September 6, who were excommunicated from the church for trying to document and bring to light ecclesiastical abuse. At least the Catholics allow a commision to do a study and they don’t excommunicate the commission.

I also know of several women (I’m assuming your ire extends to women/girls as it does to boys) who were disciplined ecclestiastically for sexual assault to hide the culprit or required to come in and give detailed confessions of their sins for the pruient interest of the bishop.

The institutions, whether they be Catholic, Mormon, the Boy Scouts or Home Depot don’t want their dirty laundry aired. I know you were angry, it is ire raising, but the Catholics don’t have a corner on trying to cover up mistakes they are ashamed of.

Your argument is sound, but it is a blade that cuts across the religious and non-religious spectrum.

P.S. This also applies to historical misbehavior too, whether it be really young wives, murderous popes, or war crimes (of the war victors.)

  6. The Roman Catholic Church has been through many scandals before this and will survive many after this. Men, (woman too), are sinful by nature. The sin of Adam will always have an influence on the human condition. The sinfull, evil actions of the hierarchy does NOT define the “Church”. The molesters and sexual abusers, sadly in every part of our lives, will have to ultimately answer to God so will never really get away with their crimes. I for one do not think God will be pleased with the actions of these individuals.
